Game of Karoliniškės

Game of Karoliniškės is an ICON BASED QUESTIONAIRE™ and a storytelling game aimed at exploring the unarticulated memories, needs and future visions through local iconography and archetypal imagery.

Karoliškės is a socialist housing district situated in western part of Vilnius. It was designed by architects and spouses Genovaitė Balėnienė and Kazimieras Rimantas Balėnas and was built by 1976.

In 1991 the TV Tower was one of the main locationes where in the aftermath of the Re-Establishment of the State of Lithuania, a protest against Soviet government took place. On the 13th of January, 1991 thirteen people were shot dead by soldiers or crushed by Soviet military tanks, over 700 injured.

During first years of Independence Lithuanian state renamed the majority of public locations to reflect current political milieu. Nine streets in Karoliniškės were renamed to comemorate the victims of Soviet agression on the 13th of January, 1991: L. Asanavičiūtės, V. Druskio, D. Gerbutavičiaus, R. Jankausko, A. P. Kavoliuko, A. J. Povilaičio, I. Šimulionio, V. Maciulevičiaus and V. Vaitkaus.

Together with district residents and local activists in Karoliniškės LAV (K-LAB) we held workshops in order to create the ICON BASED QUESTIONAIRE™ for Karoliniškės. Thanks to the volunteers in the K-LAB we collected over 70 filled questionaires and individual stories.
